Getting people to visit your website is not just a ‘build it and they will come’ project. Many factors can play a role in getting someone to come visit your place of business online.
Local SEO marketing is the process of ‘optimizing’ your website to attract web visitors to come to your online business presence from local searches on Google, Bing, Yahoo or other search engines.
What Is SEO And How Is It Different From Local SEO?
Wikipedia defines SEO as “Search engine optimization is the process of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing the visibility of a website or a web page to users of a web search engine.”
Local SEO is the search engine optimization geared to increase website traffic to your local business.
If you are a plumber living and working in Yazoo, MS, it will be of no interest to you if someone from Modesto, CA was looking for help from a plumbing contractor. Thus someone from another area typing in “plumber” in a Google search engine would find general information about plumbing or plumbers in general.
However, with the advent of personalized search where search engines use your personal information and your past history in your browser, these search engines can take the phrase “plumber” and show you related information to your query.
Would it not make more since to ‘optimize’ your website and online business footprint to enhance your opportunity to get more of those searches to your website?
And with Google capturing over 80% of the market and searchers clicking on the top three link results, being on top of the heap is as important as ever. You even have to worry about being one of the top three rated ‘snacks’ in your local market category.
Google Local Snack Pack Verses Organic Search Results
So we all probably know about search results in Google. That’s where we type something in the search bar, hit enter and up comes what we ‘think’ we want to look at.
However, local search results are a bit different than general organic search results. Below in the first image, you will see what Google calls its “snack pack’ results. Notice that you see local plumbers from the Mobile Alabama area because I typed in ‘plumbers near me” and asked Google for results.
Below here is the ‘organic’ search results showing what Google finds as most relevant to your search query.
As a business, you want to both show up in the ‘snack pack’ and ‘organic’ search results to give you the most advantageous position to get your business noticed and thus – get a call or click to your website.
How To Optimize Your Business Online To Get The Most Out Of Local SEO Marketing
So, we know that we want to be in the snack pack and we know that we want to be, if not first, then at least in the top three. So, how do we attempt to get in those most covetous of positions for Google, Bing, Yahoo or other search engines?
Wherever you have an asset (website, Facebook, Twitter, etc) make sure your Name, Address and Phone Number is present.
On your website especially. Make sure that the name of your company, your companies address and its phone number is listed on every page. Place it at the header or footer and make sure it shows up on every page.
On your social networks, make sure the N.A.P. is on your profile. Also make sure you optimize your social networks profile area with the descriptive ‘keywords’ about you, your business or services.
NOTE: Make sure that your NAP Citation is the same across all online assets. It must be the exact on at all locations online.
Claim Your Google Listings
I cannot tell you how many times I have searched for businesses or doing research about a specific area to find TONS of businesses that have not claimed their Google Business Listing online.
…You are throwing away FREE opportunities.
Go to all local directories and claim your listing such as Google My Business, Yelp, Superpages, Foursquare, Yellowpages and others. Here is list of the most prominent than local SEO marketers like to take advantage of.
Get Reviews From Your Customers
One of the most overlooked thing you can do is get reviews from your customers. It is as simple as ‘asking’ for it. Everybody has a phone and it’s smart.
And I can tell you…granny knows how to use it.
After finishing a job or completing a transaction at your point-of-sale, simply ask your customer to go to your Google My Business (have the URL on a business card and give to them), AND your social networks and give you or your business a review.
Having a large number of 4 and 5 star reviews shows the search engines that your business is important to its users. And thus they will push your business listing up in the rankings.
If you are afraid of doing this because you don’t want a bad review – then there are other things you should be worried about other than Local SEO.
You can always combat bad reviews my keeping up with your assets and answering good and bad comments/reviews.
Special Note: Yes, you should be on social networks. I suggest starting with Facebook and maybe one other that fits within your business model or plan. Don’t overload yourself with multiple social network profiles…just the major ones.
Content That Is Relevant To Your Local Market
If you can swing it, a blog on your website can dramatically increase your chances to move higher is the SERP results. What does SERP mean?
SERP is Search Engine Results Page. This is where people land online on Google when they type a keyword or what they are looking for in the address bar at the top of the page.
Having a blog with content specifically targeted to your ideal client or customer can create opportunities for your content and website to show up at the top of the SERP results.
Tell me…how many times have you searched or looked for content past the top three results much less the 2nd or 3rd page?
Get A Little Technical – Schema Markup
Now you might need some help for your web developer or someone on Upwork for this one. Schema Markup in a nutshell is coding put on your website to give the search engines a ‘clear’ picture of your you are and what your do.
Search engines look for this code or information on your website so they may give its users a more relevant search result.
On Page SEO
In conjunction with Schema Markup and using blog content, there are SEO factors on pages and/or posts that can dramatically increase your exposure to better SERP’s.
